LASIK or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis is a surgery, used to change the shape of the cornea in order to achieve better vision. Through this, vision correction for farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism can be done and the person can be free from using the glasses or contact lenses. This procedure has gained popularity of late, as it is painless and usually the patient gains a good vision within twenty-four hours. During the procedure a circular flap is made in the cornea with the help of laser and small tissues are removed through excimer laser after which the flap is place back. This is done to reshape the cornea so that there would be better focus of light on the retina.
There occurs a wide variance in LASIK eye surgery cost, although all hospitals and surgeons charge their fees on a ‘per eye' basis. According to some surveys, the cost of LASIK eye surgery in the United States of America was around $21,000 per eye in 2008 and 2009. The price of wave-front guided technology LASIK is highest, as this involves the use of precise computer generated scanning of the eye for the reshaping of the cornea. These days many people opt this as it not only gives a better visual capabilities but also obviates the use of blades – a thought that scares many. For non-customized LASIK, where the procedure is done through microkeratome or by using a bladed instrument, the price is little less (usually by $350 to $650 per eye).
This variation in costs is influenced by many factors like the technology involved like IntraLase or bladeless LASIK and wave-front LASIK. Other reasons are whether or not the fee covers the medications before and after the surgery. The costs of tests before the surgery, which are so essential to avoid complications later, generally escalate the costs. The expertise and reputation of the surgeon and the hospital and its location, are some of the other considerations that influence the price.
The LASIK surgery, however alluring option it might be, also involves certain amount of risks. Hence, it is essential that you should be aware of the possible complications associated with it before going for it. The possible LASIK eye surgery risks may be as follow –

Flap complications – The flap is lifted in order to reshape the cornea. Hence, there might be abrasion of tissues while doing it. This may especially happen, when done through microkeratome.
Inflammation due to dead cells – In some cases, there may be a possibility of inflammatory reactions if some dead cells are present beneath the flap after the procedure.
Sometimes there might be development of wrinkles on the flap.
Irregular astigmatism – If the corneal surface is not uniform after the procedure, then irregular astigmatism may occur and it would lead to a case of double vision.
Keratectasia – There might be bulging or weakening of the cornea, in case too much of the tissue is taken out. This leads to a permanent distorted vision.
Other common complications and risks may include night vision problem, dry eye and eye infections.
