Gallstone – Symptoms and Treatment

Gallstones are solid lumps or stones that form in the gallbladder or bile duct. They are formed when some of the chemicals stored in the gallbladder harden into a mass. About one in three women and one in five men have gallstones by the age of 75. Some people get just one large stone; others may have lots of tiny ones.Gallstones are small, pebble-like substances that develop in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped sac located below your liver in the right upper abdomen. Gallstones form when liquid stored in the gallbladder hardens into pieces of stone-like material. The liquid—called bile—helps the body digest fats. Bile is made in the liver, then stored in the gallbladder until the body needs it. Gallstones are the most common and costly digestive disease in the United States, causing more than 800,000 hospitalizations annually at estimated cost of over five billion dollars. More than 20 million Americans have gallstones and approximately one million new cases are diagnosed each year. Women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones; the higher prevalence of gallstones in women is thought to be caused by multiple pregnancies, obesity, and rapid weight loss. Well over half a million people undergo cholecystectomy (surgical removal of the gallbladder) each year.Gallstones usually form in the gallbladder; however, they also may form anywhere there is bile--in the intrahepatic, hepatic, common bile, and cystic ducts. Gallstones also may move about within bile, for example, from the gallbladder into the cystic or common duct.Women are four times more likely to have gallstones than men. I suspect that pregnancy and childbirth may make the abdominal area more stagnant and become susceptible to gallstone formation. I used to think that gallstones only develop in people who are obese or have a high fat diet. I now believe bile stasis or gallbladder stagnation is a major cause of gallstone formation. I have never been on a high fat diet and have always been under-weight. When I tried my first gallbladder flush, more than 50 gallstones were released.Biliary colic occurs more commonly at night, often with a sudden onset and increasing intensity over a 15-20 minute period, ending in a steady plateau which can last for several hours. The pain may spread to the area around the right shoulder. Nausea, vomiting and sweating often follow. The pain may gradually go away or decrease, becoming a less severe but persistent abdominal pain. The time period between biliary colic attacks is extremely variable; it may be weeks, months or even years.SymptomsGallstones often have no symptoms and are usually discovered by a routine x-ray, surgery, or autopsy. Symptoms usually start after a large stone blocks the cystic duct or the common bile duct. The cystic duct drains the gallbladder, and the common bile duct is the main duct draining into the duodenum. Together, these ducts form part of the biliary system. Most silent gallstones will not cause problems and go unnoticed. Sometimes gallstones may pass out of the body spontaneously. If the gallstones are causing pain, they can be removed by surgical procedures. If there is an infection, the infection can be treated by medication prescribed by your doctor.
